Episode 13 - Age In The UK

Aug 12, 2025
29 min
“Ageism hangs over older people’s lives like a dark cloud” - so says Paul Farmer, the Chief Executive of Age UK. We sat down with Paul for an extended chat when he joined the 80th birthday celebrations of Age UK Norwich. He says our society is in denial about ageing; for far too many people later life is a crisis; and the time has come to change how we age.

Mike Talbot
Mike Talbot’s media career began on the dizzy heights of the Beccles and Bungay Journal back in the 80s, when golden wedding anniversaries were big news. After graduating to the Eastern Daily Press, he ventured across the car park to join Anglia Television as a researcher, reporter and producer in news and current affairs. Anglia had a global reputation for natural history programmes like Survival and dramas like Tales Of The Unexpected. Mike mostly made films about seagulls in Southwold. After spells at Central TV and ITV Cymru Wales in Cardiff, he returned to Norwich, first as CEO of the Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind and then to head up the team at ITV Anglia.

Louise Priest
Louise Priest began her media life as a BBC local radio reporter, working in Guernsey, Derby and Birmingham before joining BBC Radio Norfolk. After a few years in news followed by a stint at presenting, she joined BBC Look East as a reporter and then presenter. Louise’s first TV appearances included feeding bats and sitting on a bus next to a bear called Pudsey! She took a couple of years off to start a family, before she returned to BBC Radio Norfolk as the breakfast show presenter for six years and then back to the BBC Look East production and presenting team.
Older And Bolder with Mike & Louise is supported by Age UK Norwich and recorded at the city studios of Future Radio.
